The Bravery Medal was originally instituted by Duke Friedrich August I with the aim of encouraging military enlistment.
It was conferred upon non-commissioned officers and enlisted men for demonstrating outstanding bravery in combat.
The recipients could be citizens of Nassau or foreign citizens.
The Type II Medals were issued under Duke Wilhelm I of Nassau, and they were conferred upon individuals who participated in the Battle of Waterloo, as well as in the Spanish Campaign (1808-1813).
