The War Medal of the Three Hanseatic Cities was jointly founded by the cities of Bremen, Lübeck, and Hamburg, and was conferred upon the soldiers who served in the Hanseatic Legion during the campaigns of 1813 and 1814. It was also conferred upon individuals who served in the Lübeck citizens' militia.
In 1813, the Hanseatic Legion was established by a group of Hamburg citizens, with the aim of fighting in the War of the Sixth Coalition. Shortly after its formation, volunteers from Lübeck and Bremen joined. The troop was composed of around 3,800 volunteers, which included officers, doctors, and military officials.
Each city officially instituted the medal on different dates.
