A pointed cross with an arch on the arms, Gothic decorations, and a raised edge, constructed of silver gilt. The recipient’s name is written across the 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock arms, and the 6 o’clock arm features the year of awarding. The reverse features a crowned monogram ‘L’ in the centre and the inscription ‘DEN’ (12 o’clock) ‘25TEN’ (9 o’clock) ‘AUGUST’ (3 o’clock) ‘1870’ (6 o’clock) on the arms. On a loop for suspension, on a red ribbon with narrow silver side stripes.
The Nursing Long Service Cross was established by Grand Duke Ludwig IV and was conferred upon individuals who rendered exceptional care of the sick and wounded during times of peace.
Candidates for the cross were not limited to nursing professionals.
The cross is similar in appearance to the cross for Medical Workers (Militär-Sanitäts-Kreuz).
The Nursing Long Service Cross in Gilt does not feature a number on the reverse which would indicate years of service.
