The Cross for Medical Workers was founded by Grand Duke Ludwig III and was conferred upon individuals, regardless of class or gender, who rendered exemplary service in the care and transportation of sick and wounded soldiers.
The Type I Medals were conferred for service during the War of 1870/71.
If a recipient of the Type I Cross demonstrated distinguished service during the First World War, they were eligible to receive a ribbon clasp that read “1914”.
