Physical Description and Item Details


A circular medal constructed of silver. The obverse bears the bust of Prince Regent Luitpold with the inscription "LUITPOLD PRINZ-REGENT VON BAYERN". The reverse bears the inscription "FÜR RETTUNG" (For Rescue), encompassed by an oak leaf wreath. On a loop for suspension.

History


The Life Saving Medal was established on February 27, 1889 by Prince Regent Luitpold. It was awarded to Bavarian citizens and foreigners who performed brave, life-risking acts to save another person’s life. Recipients of the Life Saving Medal had their names and act printed in the official gazette.
