A medallion in the shape of a marquise, constructed of silver gilt. The obverse bears a cross pattée with an elongated 6 o'clock arm on a pebbled background. The centre of the cross bears the inscription "XL". With a smooth and pebbled border. The reverse is smooth and engraved with the name of the recipient. With an ornate suspension loop.
The Decoration for Female Teachers and Women in Supervisory Positions was instituted by Grand Duchess Louise on December 3, 1880. The decoration was conferred upon women who rendered long and faithful service within the fields of education or charitable services. It was also conferred upon women who held a supervisory position, such as a matron. Recipients included but were not limited to orphanage directors and workers, medical orderlies, and auxiliary nurses.
When the recipient received a higher class, the lower class decoration had to be returned. Upon the recipient's death, the award was nonreturnable. The names of recipients were published in the papers of the Badischer Frauenverein until 1915. The reverse of the award was engraved with the recipient's name.
The award consists of a Decoration for 40 Years and a Decoration for 25 Years. In addition, there is a version of the award that does not feature the years of service on the obverse. This version of the award was likely conferred upon individuals who had rendered less than 25 years of service.
The Decoration for 40 Years was conferred upon 4 recipients between 1906 and 1915. Some sources estimate that both decorations were conferred upon a total of 101 recipients between 1880 and 1906.
