History

The Order of Labor Merit was created on January 21, 1957, but was later replaced by the National Order of Merit on December 3, 1963.

It was awarded for professional merit, long and faithful service, and for excellent behavior and morale in the workplace. The Knight was awarded to a person of at least 35 years of age for a minimum of 15 years of service. Knights could be promoted to Officer after 10 years, and Officers could be promoted to Commander 8 years.

The obverse inscription translates to “Labor Merit,” and the reverse inscription translates to “French Republic,” “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity.”

There may be several versions which vary in size, composition, and manufacturer.
