History

The National Order of Labour was created on April 1, 1942 by Marshal Philippe Pétain and the Vichy Government. After the French Liberation in 1944, the Order was permanently discontinued.

The Order was conferred upon French citizens for technical ability in their profession, or for exceptional service and devotion to their employer and nation. The Knight was awarded for 10 years of service, and a minimum of 35 years of age. Knights could be promoted to Officer after 6 years, and Officers could be promoted to Commander after 6 years.

There were a total of 100 Knights awarded in 1943 and 1944. No other grades were ever produced or awarded.

The obverse inscription translates to "Philippe Petain Marshall of France, Head of State," and the reverse inscription translates to "National Order of Labour."
