History

This decoration was founded by the National Assembly and it is the highest award conferred within the Republic of Austria.

It is conferred upon foreign and national citizens for distinguished service and exemplary achievements within the Republic of Austria that have created a positive public impact.

The recipients are chosen by the government, and the awards are conferred by the President of Austria.

The President of Austria is always awarded the Grand Star of the Order for life following their appointment to the office.

The VI Class is worn on a neck ribbon. It is also known as the Silver Grand Decoration of Honour (without star) and corresponds with the grade of II Class Commander.
