Turkey, Ottoman Empire. Order of Medjidie (Mecidiye), V Class, Knight, Military Division
(Mecidiye Nişanı). Instituted in 1851. Multi-piece construction, center appliqué in silver gilt with red enamels, mounted to a silver seven-pointed star base, crossed sabres indicating an award of the Military Division, each of the arms with three faceted rays, measuring 58.5 mm (w) x 75.5 mm (h) inclusive of its crescent moon and star suspension in silver with red enamels, intact enamels, original ribbon with hook and eye, replacement ribbon, extremely fine.
This Order was conferred upon Turkish citizens and foreigners in recognition of extraordinary civil and military services to the state. It was also awarded for military merit as well as civil merit.
Swords were added to distinguish the awards conferred for military merit.
There are several variations in the design attributes of this Order, including the addition of diamonds and rubies.
The inscription is a translation of the Arabic script on the obverse, with the Sultan's initials in the centre of the medallion. The makers mark of the Ottoman Imperial Mint, or a foreign mint, is found on the reverse.
