The Title of the Hero of Socialist Labour was the first title established by the Romanian People’s Republic in 1951. It remained the highest title under the Socialist Republic of Romania until 1971 when it was surpassed by the Title of the Hero of the Romanian Socialist Republic. It was conferred upon Romanian citizens in recognition of contributions to socialism in a variety of fields including politics, economics, science, culture, and the strengthening of the armed forces, but it was permanently suppressed after the fall of the Socialist Republic in 1989.
Recipients of this Title were granted a monetary award of 3000 lei (750 USD) and five additional vacation days. Recipients also received priority for preferential loans and housing.
There are seven known versions of the Gold Star that vary in size, composition, and attachment style. All versions have a reverse inscription that translates to “Hero of Socialist Labour.”
