The Order of the Queen Marie Cross was established by King Ferdinand I in 1917 in honour of his wife, Queen Marie, who volunteered as a nurse in the First World War. It was conferred upon Romanian men and women in recognition of meritorious medical service rendered during epidemics or wartime, but it was permanently suppressed following the abolition of the Romanian monarchy in 1947.
From 1938-1947 all decorations could be conferred on a ribbon edged in gold in recognition of wartime merit.
There are two versions of the I Class Cross that differ in the orientation of the cross arms.
There may be additional versions of the I Class Cross that differ in size, composition, or manufacturer.
