The Decoration for Meritorious Inventors was established by the Council of Ministers in 1995 as a replacement for the Meritorious Inventor Decoration awarded in the Polish People’s Republic. It was awarded until 2000 before it was discontinued. It was re-established by the Council of Ministers in 2003 and is currently awarded by the Prime Minister of the Republic to Polish citizens in recognition of outstanding inventions and creativity or meritorious contributions to science, technology, and patent and intellectual property law.
There are two versions of the Decoration that differ in design and inscription. The first features elaborate scrollwork with an obverse inscription that can be translated to “Merit for Inventiveness.” The second features an obverse inscription that translates to "Republic of Poland," and a reverse inscription that can be translated to "For Merit to Inventions."
