History

On January 24, 1919, all Allied countries agreed to manufacture a “Victory Medal” for the Great War. The medals were required to be made of bronze, 36 mm in diameter, suspended from a double rainbow ribbon, and depict the symbol of Victory with the inscription “The Great War for Civilisation.”

The Greek WWI Victory Medal was awarded to all Greek military personnel who served in the First World War.

In addition to the prescribed inscription, the Greek medal also features a list of countries in Greek which reads "England, USA, Belgium, France, Greece, Italy, Japan, Montenegro, Portugal, Russia, Romania, Serbia, Siam, etc." The official model was struck in France and bears the engraver’s name on the obverse.
