Estonia, Republic. An Order of the Cross of the Eagle, IV Class
Instituted 17 February 1928. Constructed of gilded silver with enamels, consisting of a Maltese Cross with black enameled arms, the obverse with a central silver Estonian national eagle clutching a sword and shield bearing a national coat of arms, the reverse with a black enameled medallion with a gilt date of “24. II. 1928”, the arms with a gilded inscription of “PRO PATRIA” (“FOR THE FATHERLAND”), unmarked, measuring 46.92 mm (w) x 47.15 mm (h), weighing 22.7 grams, some tarnishing and flecking of enamels evident, otherwise in near extremely fine condition.
The Order of the Eagle Cross was established by the Estonian Defence League in 1928 in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of Estonian independence. In 1936, it was adopted by the Estonian Parliament in the Decoration Act, which recognised it as a national award. It was later suppressed during the Soviet occupation, but it was renewed in 1995 following the restoration of Estonian independence.
It is conferred upon Estonian citizens and foreigners in recognition of meritorious military service and other services rendered to national defence. It is awarded with swords, in all grades, when conferred upon military personnel. It may also be awarded posthumously.
The reverse inscription translates to "For the Homeland."
