This medal was conferred upon labourers in recognition of contributions and achievements in the Republic's industrial and public life.

There are two main variations of this medal.

The medals with a 32mm diameter and the medals with a 34mm diameter. Each variation of the medal also has a different thickness.

This medal may also be known as the Distinguished Service Medal, and it was discontinued in 1991.
