In silver, featuring as an oval medallion surrounded by green enameled cherry blossoms at four points forming a cross, obverse centre featuring a Gold ancient Japanese Imperial Crown, underneath a radiant sun, surrounded by a red enameled ring adorned with laurel branches, on a finely-detailed, turquoise enameled, wave-style decoration with loop for suspension, reverse plain.
This Order was established by Emperor Meiji. It is conferred in recognition of notable services. Originally it was awarded to Japanese and foreign women, and occasionally men. Now, it is conferred only upon members of the Imperial Family and foreign ladies of distinction.
The VI Class Badge features a wave crest suspension wreath.
On April 13, 1896, this Order was increased to 8 classes with the addition of the V, VI, and VII classes.
