This medal is conferred by the Government of Japan upon individuals for meritorious service, or for excellence in their field of work.
There are several ribbons associated with this medal, which signify the purpose of the award:
a) Red ribbon - for saving a life
b) Blue ribbon - for active service to society and outstanding morality
c) Navy blue ribbon - for significant financial contributions in favour of the public
d) Yellow ribbon - for recognition as a public role model
e) Purple ribbon - for academic and artistic achievements
If the same medal is awarded twice to one person, a bar is added to their current medal.
The obverse and reverse feature Japanese characters. The obverse characters translate to "Merit Medal". The reverse characters translate to "Awarded to".
