History

The Order of Azad Hind was instituted by Subhas Chandra Bose in 1942. The Order is conferred in 5 Classes, plus a Grand Star, to Indian volunteers fighting with the Germans during the Second World War. The Order was later extended to reward members of the Indian National Army (INA) for service in the South-East Asia Campaign. German personnel may also be eligible for the award. The Order is no longer in existence.

The Martry for India (Shahid-e-Bharat), Bronze Medal, is awarded as the V highest Class of the Order of Azad Hind.

It is uncertain if there are multiple versions of the V Class Bronze Medal which vary by design according to service type recognized, with a design of surmounting swords to denote combat service and a design void of swords to denote non-combatant service. Additional research is required.
