This is a scarce and very desirable Order of Azard Hind with Swords - First Class Star, awarded to members of the Free Indian Legion for gallantry in the field of battle. The sun’s rays are crafted of heavily silvered tombac with partial gilding on the head of the tiger and the swords (separately attached); maker marked “Rudolf Souval, Wien VII” on reverse; vertical straight pinback; measuring 60.47 mm x 60.36 mm and weighing 35.9 grams. In extremely fine condition.
The Order of Azad Hind was instituted by Subhas Chandra Bose in 1942. The Order is conferred in 5 Classes, plus a Grand Star, to Indian volunteers fighting with the Germans during the Second World War. The Order was later extended to reward members of the Indian National Army (INA) for service in the South-East Asia Campaign. German personnel may also be eligible for the award. The Order is no longer in existence.
The Leader in Battle (Sardar-e-Jang) is awarded as the second highest military honour of the Azad Hind government.
There are 2 versions of the I Class Star. Stars awarded in recognition of acts of combat valour feature a design of swords, while non-combatant service is denoted by the award of a Star which does not feature swords.
