An Order of Azad Hind; Second Class Star by Rudolf Souval - In silvered feinzink, gilded center, measuring 60.25mm, marked "RUDOLF SOUVAL WIEN VII" on reverse, with original ribbon, in extremely fine condition. Footnote: The Azad Hind decorations were instituted by Subhas Chandra Bose while in Germany, initially for Azad Hind Legion, to be awarded for gallantry in the field of battle. Both Indians and Germans were eligible for the decorations. Later, the same awards were instituted by the Azad Hind government for the Indian National Army during its campaign in South-east Asia.
The Order of Azad Hind was instituted by Subhas Chandra Bose in 1942. The Order is conferred in 5 Classes, plus a Grand Star, to Indian volunteers fighting with the Germans during the Second World War. The Order was later extended to reward members of the Indian National Army (INA) for service in the South-East Asia Campaign. German personnel may also be eligible for the award. The Order is no longer in existence.
The Hero, or Warrior, of India (Vir-e-Hind) is awarded as the third highest decoration of the Order of Azad.
There are 2 versions of the II Class Star. Stars awarded in recognition of acts of combat valour feature a design of swords, while non-combatant service is denoted by the award of a Star which does not feature swords.
