This medal is conferred upon Indian Army personnel in recognition of outstanding gallantry or devotion to duty. It can be awarded posthumously. It can also be awarded to any soldier for distinguished service.

The addition of a bar to the ribbon signifies additional awards.

The reverse Hindi inscription reads as "Sena Medal".
