The Coast Guard Distinguished Service Medal was initially established in 1949 as a replacement for the Navy Distinguished Service Medal as an award for Coast Guard personnel. However, the adoption of the award was not formally approved until 1961. The Gold Medal is bestowed by the Secretary of Homeland Security to any individual who served in any capacity with the United States Coast Guard in a position of great authority. The Medal is awarded in recognition of exceptionally meritorious service to the government. It is most often awarded to senior Officers.
Additional awards are denoted by a gold star emblem worn on the ribbon.
The Medal features a Latin inscription on the reverse which translates to "Always Ready."
There may be additional versions which vary by composition.
