The NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal was established on May 1, 1961. The Bronze Medal is awarded to NASA personnel in recognition of single accomplishments or sustained performances which significantly contribute to NASA's technological or administrative programs. Qualifying services may include acts of effective leadership in aiding the development of administrative or technological skills of other NASA employees. Astronaut contributions as space flight crewmembers may qualify for the award of the Medal upon the successful completion of the first flight as a commander or payload commander.
