History

The Mediterranean Middle East War Zone Medal was originally established as the "Mediterranean Middle East War Zone Bar" by Act of Congress on May 10, 1944. On May 30, 1988, the Merchant Marines Decorations and Medals Act authorized the creation of the Mediterranean Middle East War Zone Medal. The Medal was awarded to Officers and enlisted personnel who served aboard vessels operated by the United States War Shipping Administration in recognition of service in the Mediterranean Middle East Theatre of Operations in the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea, and the Indian Ocean between December 7, 1941, and November 8, 1945. It is estimated that approximately 150,184 Medals were issued between these dates.
