The United States Antarctic Expedition Medal was established by Act of Congress on September 24, 1945, to commemorate the third expedition to the South Pole led by Admiral Richard E. Byrd between 1939 to 1941. The Medal was presented to military and civil personnel in recognition of contributions made to the State in the field of Polar exploration and science. 60 Medals were awarded in gold, 50 Medals were awarded in silver, and 50 Medals were awarded in bronze. The award criteria for the different grades, however, remains uncertain.
