The Byrd Antarctic Expedition Medal (1928-1930) was established by President Herbert Hoover by Act of Congress on May 23, 1930, to commemorate expeditions to the South Pole led by Admiral Richard Byrd, which established the base camp "Little America", between 1928 and 1930. The Medal was awarded for service in scientific investigations and extraordinary aerial explorations over the Antarctic continent. The Medal was awarded in gold, silver, and bronze, however, the award criteria for the different grades is uncertain. Between 65-66 gold, 7 silver, and 9 bronze Medals were issued.
