The Yangtze Service Medal was established by the Navy Department General Orders on April 28, 1930. The Bronze Medal was awarded to Navy and Marine Corps personnel who served in the Yangtze River Valley, Shangai, China, or surrounding waters between September 3, 1926, and October 21, 1927, or from March 1, 1930, to December 31, 1932. Army personnel who served in the 31st Infantry and were stationed in China were also eligible for the award of the Medal.

There are 2 versions of the Medal which vary reverse inscription of the name of the service.
