The Vietnam Service Medal was established by President Lyndon B. Johnson by Executive Order on July 8, 1965. The Bronze Medal was awarded to all members of the United States Armed Forces who provided military service in Vietnam and the surrounding waters and airspace between July 3, 1965, and March 28, 1973. The award was made retroactive to July 1, 1958. Personnel who served in Thailand, Laos, or Cambodia in direct support of Vietnam were also eligible for the award of the Medal. Service in an organization or naval vessel that participates or provides support for military operations, as an aircraft crewmember in 1 Vietnamese airspace flight in support of military operations, or for 30 consecutive or 60 nonconsecutive days on temporary duty also qualifies for the award of the Medal.
The Medal may also be awarded posthumously.
A bronze star emblem is worn on the ribbon to denote service in 1 out of 17 campaigns. A silver star is worn in lieu of 5 bronze stars. Navy personnel may be awarded a Fleet Marine Forces Combat Operation Insignia in recognition of ground combat.
