The Mexican Service Medal (Army) was established by War Department General Order on December 12, 1917. The Bronze Medal was awarded as a one-time decoration to United States Army personnel in recognition of service in various military engagements and expeditions in Mexico against the revolutionary leader Pancho Villa between April 12, 1911, and June 16, 1919. United States service members who were wounded or killed in action as a result of conflict against any hostile Mexican force between April 12, 1911, and February 7, 1917, were also eligible for the award. It is estimated that over 15,000 Medals were awarded.
Early issues of the Medal were stamped on the rim with the serial number.
