History

The Kosovo Campaign Medal was created by President Bill Clinton by Executive Order on May 3, 2000, as the first United States campaign medal for service in a multi-national peacekeeping force. The Bronze Medal replaced the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the Armed Forces Service Medal for service in the Kosovo campaign. The Medal was awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces in recognition of service provided in direct support of military operations for 30 consecutive or 60 nonconsecutive days in a designated area of operations between March 24, 1999, and December 31, 2013. Participation in actual combat, or in duties otherwise declared hazardous, with an armed oppositional force that is less than the qualifying time period, or service that is cut short due to medical evacuation as a result of wounds or injuries incurred in active service may still be recognized by the award of the Medal. Regular aircrew members flying sorties over an area of operations in direct support of military operations were also eligible.

2 bronze service stars are authorized for wear on the ribbon in recognition of participation in the Kosovo Air Campaign (between March 24 and June 10, 1999), and in the Kosovo Defence Campaign (between June 11, 1999, and December 31, 2013).
