The Global War on Terrorism Service Medal was established by President George W. Bush by Executive Order on March 12, 2003. The Bronze Medal is awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces in recognition of service in military operation to combat terrorism since September 11, 2001. 30 consecutive or 60 nonconsecutive days of service in active duty in a designated anti-terrorism operational area, or in support of anti-terrorism operations, qualifies for the award of the Medal. Participation in active combat regardless of time served, and service curtailed by death or injuries inflicted in action is also eligible for the award.
A bronze battle star emblem may be worn on the ribbon to denote active combat against an enemy which involves an imminent risk of death or serious bodily harm.
