The Europan-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal was established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt by Executive Order on November 6, 1942, as 1 out of 3 Theatre of Operation campaign medals created to reward American troops during the Second World War. The Bronze Medal was awarded to Armed Forces personnel for service in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre of Operation. Service in permanent assignment within the Theatre of Operation or temporary duty within the Theatre for 30 consecutive or 60 nonconsecutive days is eligible for the award. Personnel who were awarded a combat decoration while involved in active combat against the enemy.

A bronze star emblem is worn on the ribbon to denote participation in in one or more operations or engagements. A silver star is worn in lieu of 5 bronze stars. An arrowhead, also worn on the ribbon, is awarded to recipients of the Medal in recognition of participation in a beach or ambitious airborne landing.
