The Coast Guard Arctic Service Medal was authorized by the Commandant of the United States Coast Guard, Admiral Owen W. Siler, on March 20, 1976. The Bronze Medal is awarded retroactively to January 1, 1946, in recognition of 21 days of consecutive service aboard 1 out of 19 eligible Coast Guard vessels operating North of the Arctic between May 1 to October 31, or for 21 consecutive days of service North of 60 N from November 1 to April 30. 21 days of service at a designated Coast Guard station also qualifies for the award of the Medal. Civilians may also be eligible for the award.
A bronze service star emblem is worn on the ribbon to denote additional awards after January 1, 1989.
