The Second World War Air Force Pilot Wings were authorized in 1940. The Pilot Wings were modelled after the Airplane Pilot Badges which were established in 1919 and worn by military aviators and junior and reserve military aviators. After the First World War, the United States Army frequently changed pilot badges and titles, resulting in a multitude of variations and confusion of United States pilot badges. The design of the 1919 Airplane Pilot Badge was used during the Second World War, and as such, this design is often designated as the Second World War Air Force Pilot Wings.
The Second World War Air Force Pilot Wings was awarded in 3 grades. The Senior Pilot Wings were awarded to Officers and enlisted men in recognition of 5 years of flying experience and 1500 hours of flying hours.
There may be additional versions of the Senior Pilot Wings not featured here.
