The Flight Surgeon Wings were established by the United States Armed Forces during the Second World War. The Surgeon Wings are issued to Commissioned Officers who are qualified physicians or physician assistants, and who have successfully completed the Army Flight Surgeon Primary Course.
The Flight Surgeon Badge is issued in 3 grades. The Master or Chief Surgeon Wings are awarded as the highest grade to members of the Army or Air Force, respectively, in recognition of 10 years of service, 830 hours of flight, and of an award of a certification in aerospace medicine. The Master and Chief Surgeon Wings feature a star and wreath (Army) or star and scroll (Air Force) surmounting the badge. The Senior Surgeon Wing Badge is awarded as the second grade to members of the Armed Forces in recognition of 5 years of service as a flight surgeon and 400 hours of flight. The Senior Surgeon Wing Badge features a surmounting star. The Basic Flight Surgeon Badge is awarded as the lowest grade to members of the Armed Forces upon the completion of flight surgeon qualifications.
