A fine eight armed star in silver, composed of multiple rays, obverse centrepiece in bronze gilt consisting of an enameled white four-armed cross, surrounded by a detailed laurel wreath in green enamels, centre depicting a superposed bronze gilded bust of Vasco Nuñez de Balboa surrounded by the inscription ORDER OF VASCO NUÑEZ DE BALBOA on a white enameled background, the reverse with pin assembly, silver hallmark denoting fineness of 925, measuring 81.22 mm (w) x 81.10 mm (h), presenting minor toned silver, otherwise extremely fine. Footnote: The Order of Vasco Nuñez de Balboa was founded in Panama by presidential decree in 1937 to reward national and foreigners for meritorious services rendered to the country in the fields of diplomacy and international relations. The Grand Cross is exclusively granted to Secretaries of State and Ambassadors.
The Order of Vasco Nuñez de Balboa was founded by Law of January 28, 1933. It was reformed on July 1, 1941. It is currently conferred upon nationals and foreigners in recognition of outstanding diplomatic services and contributions to foster international relationships with Panama.
The Order consists of the Extraordinary Grand Cross, Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, and Knight.
Vasco Nuñez de Balboa was a Spanish explorer and conqueror who was the first European that crossed the Panamanian Isthmus and reached the Pacific Ocean in 1513.
The Grand Cross Breast Star is awarded to ambassadors and ministers or secretaries of state.
