History

The Order of Octavio Mendez Pereira was founded in 1966 to reward Panamanian citizens and foreigners who have displayed extraordinary contributions in the fields of arts, literature, science, and education. It is also awarded to those who have served to promote Panamanian culture.

Octavio Mendez Pereira (1887-1954) was a Panamanian writer, novelist, essayist, and diplomat, who is highly recognized for his studies about Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra.
