This Order was instituted by President Warrant as the highest award for extraordinary military valour. It was conferred upon members of the Security Forces during combat.
The Grand Cross of Valour was suppressed and replaced by the Gold Cross of Zimbabwe in October 1980.
The ribbon may be decorated with a gold clasp, a miniature gold cross, and a second gold cross.
The Grand Cross of Valour is a very rare award. It has only been awarded twice. It was awarded to Acting Captain C . F. Schulenberg, S.C.R. of the Selous Scouts on April 18, 1978, and Major Grahame Wilson, S.C.R., B.C.R., second-in-command of the Rhodesian SAS on June 30, 1980 after Zimbabwean independence was attained.
