The Medal for Saving Life from Drowning was established on February 16, 1957. This medal was conferred upon rescue workers, USSR citizens, and foreigners for bravery in saving lives in the water. Roughly 24,000 were awarded.

The medal is composed of brass and has a ring at 12 o'clock for the five sided suspension.

The obverse Russian inscription translates to: "For Saving Life from Drowning". The reverse features the Cyrillic script for the USSR.
