The Medal for Distinguished Service n the Preservation of Public Order was established on November 1, 1950. This medal was conferred upon members of the Internal Affairs and Internal Troops for the preservation of public order and private citizens. It was awarded for achievement in preserving public order and fighting crime. Roughly 47,000 were awarded in 1991.
This medal has one type. The composition varies according to the variation.
Variation I is made of silver and has 16 ribbons for the individual republics on the seal on the reverse.
Variation II is made of silver-plated silver alloy and there are 15 ribbons for the individual republics on the seal.
Variation III is made of nickel silver (copper, zinc and nickel alloy) and there are 15 ribbons for the individual republics on the seal.
The obverse Russian inscription translates to: "For Distinguished Service in the Preservation of Public Order". The reverse features the Cyrillic script for the USSR.
