History

The decoration was instituted on March 20, 1992 and has been awarded more than 970 times since then, including more than 440 times posthumously.

This Title and accompanying medal are conferred upon military and civilian personnel in recognition of conspicuous bravery while serving the Russian state. This Title may be awarded to foreigners as well.

This Title is a successor of the title "Hero of the Soviet Union".

The reverse features a serial number.

The reverse Russian inscription translates to: "Hero of Russia".
