This medal was instituted by Peter the Great. It was awarded to those who participated in the battle of Kalisz.

The Battle of Kalisz (aka Kalish) occured on October 29, 1706 in Kalisz, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The three hour battle was fought between the aligned Poles, Saxons and Russians of 30,000 soldiers against the smaller Swedish forces of nearly 4,500. The results was a Russian-Polish-Saxon victory at the cost of 4,900 casualties. The Swedish suffered 3,000, including 1,800 prisoners who were eventually returned.
