History
The Order of Valour was instituted by Queen Elizabeth II and the Governor-General of Papua New Guinea by the National Honours System on the 30th Anniversary of Papua New Guinea’s independence, August 23, 2005. The Papua New Guinea Honours System was created to nationally recognise outstanding contributions made in service of the state. The new Honours System is administered alongside the Imperial Honours System.
The Order of Valour is conferred in one grade, the Cross of Valour. The Cross rewards citizens, or foreigners in the form of an Honorary Award, for selfless acts of extreme courage and bravery that risk personal life for the nation. It may be awarded post-humorously.
Recipients are entitled to use the post-nominal letters CV.
