History
The Order of the Star of Melanesia was instituted by Queen Elizabeth II and the Governor-General of Papua New Guinea by the National Honours System on August 23, 2005 (the 30th Anniversary of Papua New Guinea’s independence). The Papua New Guinea Honours System was created to nationally recognise outstanding contributions made in service to the state. The new Honours System is administered alongside the Imperial Honours System.
The Order of the Star of Melanesia is conferred in one grade, the Companion of the Star of Melanesia. It is awarded to citizens, or foreigners by an Honorary Award, to recognise 15 years or more of highly distinguished and inspirational service to Papua New Guinea, Melanesia, or humanity.
Recipients are entitled to the post-nominal letters CSM.
