The Commendation for Distinguished Service was instituted on 15 February 1991 and it is awarded to Australian Defence Force personnel who perform their duties in warlike operations with distinction.
The Commendation is a row of nickel-silver flames with a Federation Star in the centre. The insignia is attached to a ochre-red ribbon.
Recipients are not entitled to use post-nominal letters.
