The Anniversary of National Service 1951–1972 Medal was introduced in April of 2001 and it was conferred upon individuals who participated in the National Service schemes that took place between 1951 and 1971. At the age of 18, all Australian males were required to complete 176 days of training and two years of service with the Australian Army Reserve.

The obverse of the medal features the Australian Defence Force emblem, with the emphasis placed on the crossed swords as the army was the Army was most directly affected by the national service schemes. Above the emblem, there is a Federation Star. The interior circumference of the medal features the inscription “ANNIVERSARY OF NATIONAL SERVICE 1951-1972.” The reverse of the medal depicts the Crux constellation surrounded by a wheel cog, which represents co-operation between the Australian Defence Force and the community.

Next-of-kin of deceased military personnel also received this award.
