History

The Hero of the Republic was instituted by Legislative Decree on October 20, 1973, as Syria's highest title. The Order is bestowed upon members of the Syrian Armed Forces in recognition of exceptional combat performance. Members of the Armed Forces who have demonstrated combat performance which significantly alters the course of fighting in favour of Syria, as well as Air Force personnel who have shot down 5 or more enemy aircraft, may qualify. Additionally, civilians and foreigners may also be eligible for the award.

The Order may also be issued posthumously and repeat awards may be made.

The Decoration is worn from a neck ribbon.
