History

The Gallantry Medal (Nut al-Shuja'at) was instituted by King Ghazi in April 1934. The Medal was awarded to Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers, and other enlisted personnel of the Iraqi Military Forces in recognition of demonstrations of supreme gallantry. The Medal may also be referred to as the "Medal for Bravery" and was modified following the Iraqi Revolution in 1958 (see IRQ123).

A gold crown emblem is authorized for wear on the ribbon to denote subsequent qualifying acts of gallantry.

There are two versions of the Medal to distinguish recipients of the Iraqi Air Force and the Iraqi Ground Force. Medals issued to members of the Air Force feature a blue enamelled centre, while Medals issued to members of the Ground Forces feature a white enamelled centre.
