History


The Order of Ismail was instituted between 1915 and 1922 and is named in commemoration of the Viceroy and Khedive of Egypt, Ismail Pasha, who reigned between 1863 and 1979 and who constructed the Suez Canal. The Order of Ismail is bestowed upon Egyptian nationals and foreigners in recognition of chivalrous and honourable services provided to the throne. The Order became obsolete following the establishment of the Republic of Egypt in 1953.

The Order is composed of 4 classes. The Grand Cordon was limited to 30 members.

The Grand Cordon is worn from a sash.

The Grand Cordon features an obverse Arabic inscription which translates to "Order of Ismail.
